Interview for the website www.rage-online.be,based in Belgium...
Erik Ypma is the name that his parents gave to him 34 years ago. Dione on the contrary is the name that gave this Dutch dj/producer a lot of fame already in the hardcorescene. 15 years ago he made the choice to start playing and producing music for you and that resulted into an uncountable number of records and performances. We thought that it was about time to get to know this man better with this interview:
-You started as a radio-dj at the end of the 80’s, beginning of the 90’s on
radio Lelystad. What kind of program was this and why did it interest you? :
It was a program with house music, which evolved later into a hardcore radioshow. I played already at parties at that time and it looked fun to me to play on the radio. A few friends of me started it as a part of the “House against Hate” campagne and they asked me to join...
-How Did this evolve further? :
The show has been broadcasted a lot longer, but I ended up at New Dance Radio because of the radiowork, that is where I did the show “Hakkeuh” for a long time. That show was very popular and has won several ID&T awards.
-After some time you started playing and producing for ID&T. Was this a
dream coming true? How did this happen? :
It started with playing at the first Mysteryland, in Lelystad, my livingplace. By connections it was arranged that I could play there. This was of course one of the most amazing things for a starting dj. Because of that performance I got a lot more bookings, together with Dj Unity I was a dj-duo. We could play at the ‘Thunderdome on Tour’ parties, but also in the Sportpalace in Antwerp . The producing started as a hobby, but I got a contract with RamsHorn very soon. Then I started to take it all more seriously and because I knew people at ID&T already the transfer was quickly made. Although I did have some problems with contracts and juristical battles, but this all ended well luckily.
-Your first productions did have a very recognisable Dione-sound from the
start. Something they still have now: MF’s, Just kickin’ ass, Pain till I die, Sick confusion, Frozen, Mayhem, Darkness & Brightness, the way is shut, dna theory, ... how do you work and how do you describe your productions yourself? :
How do I work... it differs; sometimes I have this idea before already, by using certain samples, or if I have to do a remix. But most of the time I start with creating a kick and then I just mess around till I have something that I like and then I start to build the track with it. Doesn’t sound very exciting of course, but making music is just a mather of trying and finding something nice by coincidence. My productions I would describe as mainstream with a little bit of experimental and the other way around...
-With E-noid and SRB we called your 2 most famous aka’s. What do you do
differently then under the Dione-project? :
E-noid is a little bit rougher and more experimental music, SRB is terror and speedcore or very vague productions. But it doesn’t have to be so strict really. Mostly when I finished a track then I think ‘that is E-noid, that is SRB’... With Dione I try to focus on the mainstream hardcore, more melody and such.
-You did a lot of collaborations already too. With who would you like to
work together in the future? :
I would like to work together with names from outside the hardcore scene, like Prodigy and Chemical Brothers...
-What is all in the release-sheduele for the next months? :
DNA20 together with Negative A is going to be released soon. Next to that my Dione-album is comming soon. With a lot of great hits, lots of remixes by other producers and some new tracks. Then a few vinyl-releases will follow with tracks from the album. And later this year there has to come a new E-noid album with the same recipe.
-What do you do in the daily life if we don’t talk about the music for a
Not so much... I am busy fulltime with producing and dj’ing and of course once every 2 weeks Megarave radio on www.hardcoreradio.nl. Besides that I spend a lot of time on the internet...
-Who/what has had a big influence on the life of Erik Ypma? :
The music of course... and my family...
-If you look over your current career are you happy with it or would you
have done some things differently if you have known? :
I think that I would have started more sooner with making music..
-What did you think was the best event that you ever played on and where
would you like to absolutely play sometime? :
Hard to say... I have had so many nice parties... the first time dj’ing (at a small party, but 5 hours long) has made a big impression on me, just like the first big event. The best memories are Mysteryland (in Lelystad and at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht ), Thunderdome (Thialf, Heerenveen) and of course Dominator a few weeks ago, mostly because I played only own productions there for one hour long.
But also more smaller parties in Los Angeles ( USA ) and England because of the enthousiastic people there.
